For more than two decades now, we’ve been presenting the work of St. Lucia’s finest artists in our beachfront art gallery at Anse Chastanet, where the eclectic and ever-changing collection of has something for everyone and every budget. Some of our most popular pieces, however, are by one very prolific local artist, Zaka. Here’s his story:
Simon Gajadhar (affectionately known as Zaka), is famous for his signature collection of Crayola-bright masks and fanciful sculptures. Born and raised in London, England, he came to the island 23 years ago to visit his St. Lucian father. “But I tore up my ticket, burnt my jacket, and couldn’t go back,” says the former shipwright and carpenter, who soon began experimenting with wood carving and adopted the name of the Haitian god of earth, trees and fields. Now, Zaka is so well known that mail addressed simply to “Zaka, St. Lucia” actually reaches him!
His colorful wooden masks and totems, many made from recycled telephone poles, have become synonymous with St. Lucia, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have Zaka’s work in our very own gallery. Here you’ll find large show-stopping pieces that really make a statement on a wall (don’t worry, we can arrange shipping for you), as well as smaller totems that you can stash in your hand luggage and give as gifts to folks back home. Whichever you choose, they’re a colorful reminder of your St. Lucian stay that will last much longer than your tan!
